The station closed on August 25, 1984 and was operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). Currently serving the Red Line, this station serves the National Institutes of Health campus and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and is located at Rockville Pike and South Drive. As the area has little gravel and no passenger cars, the station is used only by staff and visitors from those two institutions.

The proposal coincides with the closure of the 6.8-mile (10.9 km) Chorus line at the Van Ness-UDC station and the opening of the Bethesda, Friday Heights, Grosver and Tullytown stations.
