About 30 soldiers based in New York and Massachusetts participated in the two-day experience, learning how to operate the weapon and developing combat skills to help their units.

Participants were taught how to disassemble, assemble and fire the weapon and the effects of wind and altitude on long-range shooting. Soldiers then practiced their skills with the new weapon by participating in target practice at the Fort Drum Range.

"[The rifle] was developed to bridge the gap between the marksman and the sniper," U.S. Army Training Specialist David Beasley said in a news release.
Equipped with a Sig Sauer Tango6 sight and a special stock and suppressor, the rifle can effectively engage targets up to 300 meters (984 feet) away.
Beasley explained that the Army needed a weapon with a range of 300 to 600 meters to reduce reliance on snipers for long-range fire.
Cavalry Scout Sgt. Jonathan Harris said one of the benefits of using the new weapon is that soldiers no longer have to carry a lot of surveillance equipment because the rifle has six-times magnification and night vision capabilities.

The United States Army Squad Marksman Rifle (SDM-R) is a heavily modified M16 series rifle designed to provide greater accuracy at longer ranges while giving infantry squads increased firepower.
The SDM-R was designed to provide squad-level measurement capabilities out to 600 meters, similar to the needs expressed by USSOCOM members that led to the development of weapons such as the Mk 12 Special Purpose Rifle (SPR) and the SEAL Recon Rifle.

Adding an embedded gunner at the platoon or squad level is an ongoing process in the United States Army. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) pioneered this during Project Metropolis before creating the "Squad Advanced Marksman" (SAM) position along with the Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle (SAM-R) specifically for this purpose.
The 3rd Infantry Division followed suit, introducing a training program to have one marksman per squad, the Squad Designated Marksman (SDM), and developing a rifle, the Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDM-R). The SDM is an integral part of the squad and serves first as a gunner and then as a designated gunner. The SDM is not intended to be a squad sniper, measuring the enemy with precision fire at long ranges, but instead is trained to directly support the squad with well-aimed shots at ranges slightly longer than the normal measured ranges for rifles.
Like the US Marine Corps SAM-R, the 3rd Infantry Division SDM-R was an M16 precision rifle developed in-house by the US Army Marksmanship Division with 240 rifles delivered for deployment to Iraq.
The SAM-R has been superseded by the US military, primarily due to the effectiveness of NATO's 5.56-class ammunition in the DMR role.

The Arkansas National Guard Marksmanship Training Center conducts the four-day Detachment Marksmanship Course at Camp Joseph T. Robinson. Soldiers fire over 1,500 rounds from the M16A4 rifle under the strict supervision of the course cadre.

The U.S. Army is preparing to issue thousands of new rifles to infantry units during service. The M110A1 Squad Designated Marksman Rifle (SDMR) was designed to extend the range of infantry units equipped largely with short-barreled carbines. The standard nine-man infantry squad of the US Army consists of two fire teams led by a squad leader. Each squad consists of two riflemen with M4 carbines, one grenadier with M4 carbine and grenade launcher, and one M249 automatic squad. A squad can produce an enormous amount of firepower, with the M4 effective out to 500 meters and the heavier, faster M249 effective out to 1,000 meters.
The current organization has its flaws. While the M4 is accurate, it often lacks the magnified optics to make accurate shots at medium to long ranges, and the 5.56 round falls off sharply after 400 yards. The M68 red dot sight is durable and "soldier proof," but lacks the ability to approach, assess, and engage potential targets at distances greater than that possible with the naked eye. The M249 fires up to 850 rounds per minute, but is relatively inaccurate and is designed to provide suppressive fire against the enemy by keeping their heads down while the rest of the squad maneuvers against them.
During the Iraq War, the US military realized the need for a rifle-type weapon with increased optics that had the range to recognize and engage targets at long distances. The Army sent thousands of M14 assault rifles, placed in storage before the Vietnam War, to gunsmiths for upgrading. The result, the M14 Enhanced Battle Rifle (EBR), was a 7.62mm (as opposed to the M4's 5.56mm) caliber with a Leupold 3.5-10x variable power scope. This combination of sight and heavier caliber allows a trained soldier to engage distant targets beyond those of the M4 carbine. Alternatively, a designated gunner can ensure the security of his squad by surveying the location or area of operations from a clear vantage point.
Unfortunately, the M14 EBR was a mixed bag. Although the EBR reintroduced the powerful 7.62 cartridge to the squad and gave the Brigadier increased optics, the M14's operating system is old and the M14 series weapons are extremely difficult to maintain accuracy in the field. The system was also heavy, weighing fourteen pounds with a twenty-round magazine loaded. The gas piston system and new hand guard also made the forend heavy and harder to aim quickly.

Still, the designated marksman rifle concept was sound. Even as militaries move from guerrilla warfare to large-scale wars of power against rival mechanized armies, the requirement for a specific rifle for a marksman still stands. In particular, the focus on countering modern armies brings with it the prospect of engaging enemy soldiers wearing body armor.
On July 12, German weapons manufacturer Heckler and Koch announced that it will produce between 5,000 and 6,000 new M110A1 Squad Designated Marksman rifles for the US military. Heckler and Koch will manufacture the rifles in Oberndorf, Germany, and then ship them to an H&K facility in Georgia. Once there, they will be outfitted with sights, scope mounts and at least ten other accessories specified by the US military.
The M110A1 is based on the Heckler and Koch G28 rifle, which in turn is based on the company's HK417 rifle. The M110A1 bears some resemblance to the M4 carbine and is similar in layout, with the magazine release, safety, charging handle all in the same locations. Loading, firing and jamming methods are very similar or identical to the M4. One significant difference under the hood is that the M110A1 uses a piston operating system instead of the M4/M16's direct firing system. The use of a gas piston system results in a firearm that avoids the risk of overheating while requiring less field cleaning.
The M110A1 is an accurate weapon, with the company claiming a guaranteed accuracy of 1.5 minutes of angle (MOA) at 100 meters. Generally, this means that a trained shooter should be able to place all of their shots within a 1.57-inch circle at 100 yards. At longer distances, however, that circle opens up proportionally, with the same rifle and shooter shooting within a 9.42-inch circle at 600 yards. Given that the average fighter is about eighteen inches wide at the shoulders, this still offers a high chance of hitting if aimed at the center of the table.
